We're ready to go with the Quarterfinals in the United Cup. Both legs of each series will be played today, beginning with...
BMW RockDome, Westside: The Rockers have Goatee resting in this fixture, while the Torpedoes put Mr. Snowman on the bench for the first leg. Smudge had pace at first but fell with 258 for Infinity to kick things off. Misty was a little better with 373 for Westside in a slow-moving attack at the start. Fluffina smacked 514 for the Torpedoes to raise the stakes on offense a bit higher. Slinks followed suit, plastering 650 for the Rockers at the halfway mark to keep them ahead. Shelley kept Infinity in the fight with 494 this time, making things a little uncomfortable for the hosts. Chimpy didn't match it, but his 470 was enough to maintain a lead for Westside. Hughbert was stopped at 267 for the Torpedoes, giving them a score of 1533. Midnight rallied 425 for the Rockers at the end, giving them a win at 1918. Westside will travel with a 385-lead as they prepare for the second leg.
McDonald's Pitch at Pirates Park, Atlantic: A cross-division match sees the host Pirates sit Isabella while Strawberry takes a seat for the Spurs. Spice charged with 519 for Victoria on a pacey and bold opening attack. Delila kept it close with 461 for Atlantic on the first turn, but they are slightly behind. Yekaterina pummeled 529 at an excellent pace for the Spurs to keep them ahead. Steven lost ground with 388 for the Pirates, unable to keep up with the visitors' aggressive play. Sage faltered with 250 for Victoria, leaving the door open for the hosts to respond. Klaus made a move with 451 for Atlantic, gaining some ground ahead of the final turn. Mitchell collected 441 for the Spurs to give them a total of 1739. Jason N. couldn't meet the challenge with 400 individually to give the Pirates a final of 1700. Victoria heads home with a narrow 39-point lead as they look to pull off another upset.
Amazon Field, Golden: The Pilots, fresh off a third round scare, sit Dusty versus a lower-division Knights side resting Melissa for this match. Kiwi had an awful start with only 112 for Terrace City this time out. Valencia was better with 390 to start Golden off in decent form. Jennifer barely covered it with 300 for the Knights on their second attack. Strut slugged 1102 for the Pilots, a breakout moment that could have a ripple effect throughout the series. Oreo's 355 for Terrace City was a solid effort but not enough to make much of an impact on the game. Max matched it with 355 for Golden, keeping the hosts far ahead. Quincy's 128 left the Knights low at 895 in their first loss of the competition. Sparkles was hardly better with 160, giving the Pilots a winning total of 2007. Golden will travel with a hefty lead of 1112 points.
Coca-Cola Field, Boston: The first legs wrap up here, with the Blades sitting Stealth while Sweetheart takes a seat for the Swifts. Snowball walloped 855 for Swordpoint on a surprising first turn of the game. Patches just took out her wicket on a backhand flick, ending at 883 to keep pace in an electric start to the game. Dreamy took a major step back with only 160 for the Blades on the second attack. Puff II had a rather unimpressive 195 for the Swifts as well, keeping the game close at the midway point. Bandit leveled off with 345 for Swordpoint to provide the hosts a small challenge. Gradley missed a swing and backhanded the ball into his wicket to end at 330 as Boston has been unable to really control the game. Sugar fell at 310 as the Blades close the game at 1670. Ice Cream stepped up with 422 to ensure a win for the Swifts at 1830. Boston's edge is 160 points ahead of the second leg.
Audi Knights Pitch, Terrace City: The most lopsided leg one goes first for leg two, with the Knights sitting Kiwi while the Pilots bench Sparkles. Valencia was beat on a swing and miss at 193 for Golden, leaving them in a bit of danger to start the second leg. Jennifer started the comeback effort with 506 for Terrace City. Dusty fought back with 334 for the Pilots to cover the game deficit by a thin margin. Oreo made another gain with 429 for the Knights on the second attack. Strut didn't have a breakout attack this time, hitting 295 as Golden is content to coast toward the finish. Quincy's 429 got Terrace City a little closer in the series, but they'll need a big finish to flip the result. Max tapped 295 more for the Pilots, who lost this game at 1117 but moved up to 3124 in the combined series score. Melissa couldn't provide the challenge, her 258 sealing the Knights' exit at 1622 in the game win but 2517 in the series loss on points. Golden is the first team in the Semifinals.
Nissan Infinity Stadium, Infinity: The Torpedoes are not in a good position, sitting Hughbert while the Rockers cycle their captain Misty out for this road leg. Slinks had a simple 357 for Westside, about doubling their series advantage with the effort. Smudge didn't match it with 334 for Infinity, keeping things steady through the first turn. Goatee stayed in the same groove with 361 for the Rockers, chipping their way forward at this stage. Fluffina broke through with 550 for the Torpedoes, making a series of things as the overall deficit shrunk greatly. Chimpy fired back with 405 for Westside, not covering all of the recent damage. Shelley pushed forward with 555 as Infinity makes an honest effort to flip the series with a player each to go. Midnight exited at 384 for the Rockers, their game total at 1507 with a series total of 3425. Mr. Snowman fell short at 285 for the Torpedoes, who won the game at 1724 but lost the series at 3257. Westside's narrow escape could be a warning of things to come in the Semifinals.
Blades Fusion ProGlide Park, Swordpoint: The Blades rest Dreamy for a critical second leg match, trailing the Puff II-less Swifts by just 160 after the first leg. Patches shoved 490 for Boston at the start, a solid performance from the captain. Snowball did well to keep pace with 456 for Swordpoint, who seem set to lie in wait for the visitors to show weakness. Gradley kept the pace up with 445 for the Swifts, who are sustaining a strong offense. Bandit tried to make the Blades a little of their own luck, but exited at 459, only a small gain at this stage. Sweetheart took a step back with 289 for Boston, leaving their game and series leads exposed. Stealth failed to capitalize on the opportunity with only 245 for Swordpoint, who will have one more chance to make a move. Ice Cream hauled in 388 for the Swifts to put them at a final score of 1612 for the game and 3442 in the series. Sugar's 376 for the Blades was not enough to save them from losses at 1536 in the game and 3206 in the series. Boston is set to take on Golden in the Semifinals, colloquially known as the Doubles Derby.
Sprint Pitch, Victoria: The final quarterfinal leg is here, with the Spurs up by only 39 points as they sit Sage while Steven is out for the Pirates. Delila started hot with 487 for Atlantic on a pacey first turn for the visitors. Spice answered with 447 for Victoria, putting them down by a single point in the series in what could be a tight finish. Isabella had a bit of a slip at 350 for the Pirates, a dangerous time to fall off the pace. Yekaterina surged forward with 644 for the Spurs, pulling them ahead again at the halfway point. Klaus couldn't keep Atlantic on track, his measly 96 putting the visitors in significant danger. Strawberry tacked on 414 for Victoria, boosting their lead late in the game. Jason N. picked up 410 for the Pirates, but their exit was confirmed with scores of 1343 in the game and 3043 in the series. Mitchell added 361 for good measure, giving the Spurs 1866 for the game and 3605 overall. Victoria's Cinderella run continues onto the final day of United Cup play when they face Westside.
That's it for today's games. Tomorrow, the Semifinals, Finals, and maybe a third-place match are set to go.
