We're back with another day of games today. The first is in...
Samsung Arena, Whitewater: Twinkie III v. Shawn. The blue cue gets the first set today, playing 9-ball. In game 1, Whitewater's Twinkie III had a three-ball run from ball-in-hand after Swordpoint's Shawn scratched, but the former left the 9 at the bottom right and the latter tapped it in for a 1-0 series lead. Game 2 didn't go particularly well for either player, but the Blades' Shawn came up with a win after the Shores' Twinkie III left the 9 short at the bottom right again, making it a 2-0 series lead. Twinkie III capitalized on a four-ball run and Shawn's lack of finish for game 3, winning by putting the 9 in the top right. The series favored Shawn 2-1, and he takes his #54 ranked 9-ball bid to the second round.
Coca-Cola Field Exhibition Center, Boston: Gradley v. Twilight. The silver cue gets the appearance in this 12-ball set. Boston's Gradley played a quick game 1, scoring a three-ball run from the break and making quick work of the other three before Central's Twilight could catch up, giving Gradley the 1-0 series lead. The Swifts' Gradley ran out of momentum in game 2, leaving two on the table and giving the Warriors' Twilight ball-in-hand, which she used for a four-ball run-out to win the game and tie the series at 1. In game 3, Gradley was able to flip the script on Twilight, working a four-ball run-out of his own after thorough set-up shots, taking the game and a 2-1 series win. Ranked #18 for 12-ball, Gradley will host Swordpoint Blades captain Snowball in the second round at this venue.
Mercedes-Benz Forum, Harrison: Twinkie II v. Dani. The blue cue is back for 7-ball. Harrison's Twinkie II had an easy end to game 1, as Capital City's Dani hit the 7 wide on a tough cut, and scratched, giving Twinkie II a ball-in-hand tap-in for a 1-0 lead over the former Specter. The Specters' Twinkie II ran five ball at one point, including a deft double-pot that sent the 1 to the bottom left and 4 to the bottom side, but her miss on the 6 allowed Dani to make the last two balls to the top left for the win and a 1-1 tie in the series. Twinkie II fired back with a confident finish in game 3, running out the last four balls to claim the series 2-1. Ranked #9 for 7-ball, Twinkie II will host Shannon of the Southern Monarchs in the second round at this venue.
Nike Field Events Center, Commerce: Ice Cream v. Sparkles. The silver cue returns for a series of 8-ball. Todavía's Sparkles nearly screwed up a good game 1, watching her shot too long and committing a stick violation, but Commerce's Ice Cream couldn't catch up, and Sparkles had a three-ball run-out to take a 1-0 series lead. The Tradewinds' Ice Cream made a couple of bank shots in game 2, and that paired well with the Stills' Sparkles jamming two of her balls on the edge of the top right, giving Ice Cream the time to seal the game and tie the series at 1. Ice Cream rallied on a four-ball run late in game 3, but missed the 8. Sparkles buried it, taking the series 2-1. Ranked #72 in 8-ball, Sparkles heads to Eastside's HP Field to face the Sharks captain Graham in the second round.
Nestle's Warriors Hall, Central: Twilight v. Twinkie II. The blue cue continues the alternating pattern for a series of 10-ball. Harrison's Twinkie II played a sharper game than did Central's Twilight, and this was rewarded when Twilight scratched on the 10, giving Twinkie II a free shot that she made for a 1-0 series lead. The Warriors' Twilight played a more dominant game 2, and the Specters' Twinkie II could only watch at the end when Twilight double-potted the 9 to the bottom right (called shot) and caromed the 10 to the top right for the win to tie the series at 1. Twilight watched her best chance to win get wiped off the board late in game 3 due to it being an improper call, and Twinkie II battled for a bit before rattling off a three-ball run-out to take the series 2-1. Twinkie II advances with her #57 ranked 10-ball campaign into the second round.
HP Field Events Center, Eastside: Chelsea v. Nicole. The silver cue alternates in again for a set of 7-ball. Southern's Nicole won game 1, but it came only when Eastside's Chelsea missed contact on the 2. Nicole buried the 2 and converted a 3-7 combination to the top right for the 1-0 lead in the series. The Monarchs' Nicole convincingly clinched the series with the 7 going to the top left on the break for game 2, stunning the Sharks' Chelsea and the majority of the home fans. Chelsea finally caught a break in game 3, winning with a straight shot to the top left on the 7 after a scratch by Nicole. Nicole, ranked #71 for 7-ball, still took the series 2-1, and she will play in the second round.
GE Stadium Events Center, Southridge: Shaggy v. Whiskers. The silver cue gets another appearance, this time for Rotation. Neither player really appeared to want game 1 all that much, as it took until the final turn for Shaggy of Southridge to rock a three-ball run-out, winning 8-4 to take a 1-0 lead over Infinity's Whiskers. The Defenders' Shaggy did much better in game 2, using the 5 as a focal point in her six-ball run, which paced her attack in an 8-2 win that the Torpedoes' Whiskers had little involvement in, giving Shaggy the 2-0 series lead. Game 3 played out as highly competitive, with each player getting small leads. Whiskers emerged with the 8-7 game win, but Shaggy still controlled the series 2-1. Shaggy, ranked #32 for Rotation, will play in the second round.
Mercedes-Benz Forum, Harrison: Sydney Sierota v. Nightfur. The silver cue keeps going with 15-ball. Royal's Nightfur had the better of play in game 1, but the first time Harrison's Sydney applied defense, Nightfur countered with a kick combination of the 12-15 to the bottom left for the win and a 1-0 series lead. The Specters' Sydney played a lot tougher in game 2, giving as good as she got against the Crowns' Nightfur, and it worked out when Nightfur missed the 15, allowing Sydney to mop it up to tie the series at 1. Sydney was cruising late in game 3, but scratched to end a three-ball run, and Nightfur used the ball-in-hand for a three-ball run-out, clinching the series at 2-1. Nightfur is ranked #49 for 15-ball and headed to the second round.
Nestle's Warriors Hall, Central: Dustin v. Smudge. The silver cue continues a long stretch of action with 9-ball. Central's Dustin capitalized on Infinity's Smudge illegally contacting the 9, using his ball-in-hand for a 1-9 combination to the top right to take a 1-0 series lead. The Warriors' Dustin had to work a bit harder for his win in game 3, but he impressed as much with a five-ball run-out to stymie the Torpedoes' Smudge and take a 2-0 lead in the series. Dustin eased up a bit during game 3, but he still ended up with the win, scoring a three-ball run-out to secure the 3-0 series sweep. Dustin is ranked #46 for 9-ball, advancing to the second round on an emphatic note.
Google Hall, Modernistic: Chimpy v. Shannon. The blue cue is back after the long layoff for some 15-ball. Modernistic's Chimpy put up a solid effort in game 1, but he still needed a miss on the 15 by Southern's Shannon before he could mop it up for the win and a 1-0 series lead after a competitive game. The Monarchs' Shannon had a confident game 2, working around good shooting by the Union's Chimpy to piece together a four-ball run-out to tie the series at 1. Shannon dominated at the end of game 3, working two three-ball runs to seal the game and take the series 2-1 in a comeback. Ranked #78 for 15-ball, Shannon will play on to the second round.
Mercedes-Benz Forum, Harrison: Twinkie II v. Cowzart. The blue cue gets consecutive series now with 9-ball in continuing a busy day for Twinkie II. The heavy schedule has not caused problems for Harrison's Twinkie II, and she pulled out a four-ball run-out in good form to win game 1 over Pearl's Cowzart for a 1-0 series lead. The Surfers' Cowzart bounced back in stunning fashion, piecing together a seven-ball run through the middle of the game and then scoring the 9 after the Specters' Twinkie II missed on it, tying the series 1-1. Cowzart had a three-ball run and a five-ball run in game 3, but he didn't get the ball that mattered, and Twinkie II made sure he only had one chance at it, potting it to the bottom left to take the game and steal the series 2-1. Ranked #22 in 9-ball, Twinkie II was outplayed but advances to the second round anyway.
Nissan Hall, Infinity: Smudge v. Yekaterina Vasilyeva. The red cue gets its first appearance in the last series of the afternoon, playing 12-ball. Infinity's Smudge burst out to a big advantage in game 1, and Victoria's Yekaterina could only play defense most of the game. Smudge ended up breaking through when Yekaterina had three left, winning for a 1-0 series lead. The Spurs' Yekaterina got off to a hot start in game 2, putting the Torpedoes' Smudge on her back foot, but she used stifling defense to smother Yekaterina. Eventually, Yekaterina gave up a wild card ball, and Smudge rallied for a three-ball run-out with the advantage to take a 2-0 series lead. In game 3, Smudge gave a wild card ball to Yekaterina on the break, but the latter couldn't capitalize, getting out-maneuvered by Smudge as she sealed up a 3-0 series sweep. Ranked #58 for 12-ball, Smudge is through to the second round.
Amazon Field Exhibition Hall, Golden: A. Charlton v. Kayla. The red cue will get the first set back in the evening as well, playing 7-ball. Golden's Charlton ended up with an unimpressive win over Queens' Kayla in game 1, as neither had the best shooting, but Charlton took the last two balls for a 1-0 series lead. Charlton did all of the work for the win in game 2, making every ball over three turns as the Pilots player took a 2-0 series lead over a punchless Kayla of the Flames. Charlton sealed the series at 3-0, caroming the cue off the 3 to pot the 7 in the top side. Charlton, ranked #48 for 7-ball, will play in the second round.
Kraft Forum, Royal: Frosty v. Kavan. The blue cue is back for some 10-ball. Victoria's Kavan hit a three-ball run-out at the end of a tight game 1, using the good form to top Royal's Frosty with a 1-0 series lead. The Spurs' Kavan controlled possession in game 2, dominating with a four-ball run from the break. The Crowns' Frosty got a few shots in during the middle of the game, but Kavan sealed it with a three-ball run-out, clinching the series at 2-0. Kavan did almost all of the work again in game 3, and nearly lost the game, but a scratch by Frosty gave him ball-in-hand on the 10, which he buried to sweep 3-0. Kavan, ranked #65 for 10-ball, heads to the second round.
Apple Center, Todavía: Leonardo v. Gabe. The blue cue gets another series, now up for 8-ball. In game 1, Todavía's Leonardo did a good job of just staying a couple steps ahead of Infinity's Gabe, riding a consistent effort to the end of the game for a 1-0 series lead over a decent visitor. The Torpedoes' Gabe will rue his illegal contact in game 2, as the Stills' Leonardo took a seven-ball run from ball-in-hand, and then won it with a clean shot on the 8 on his next turn, securing the series at 2-0. Leonardo rallied with a four-ball run to flip game 3 in his favor, and then iced it on the next turn to complete the 3-0 sweep on Gabe. Ranked #37 for 8-ball, Leonardo advances to the second round.
Chevrolet Center, Everton: Blizzard v. Dusky. The red cue is back in action for a series of 15-ball. Everton's Blizzard made quick work of game 1, kicking the cue off the bottom and left rails to touch the 1 over to the top left, with the ricochet sending the cue to tap the 15 in the bottom right, stunning Archtown's Dusky as Blizzard took a 1-0 series lead with a huge highlight shot. The Arrows' Dusky impressed with a double-pot of the 5 to the bottom side and a series of bounces that sent the 13 to the top right early in game 2. The Eagles' Blizzard had the last laugh, winning with a four-ball run-out capped by a bad-angle bank of the 15 to the top side to clinch the series at 2-0. Blizzard had control in game 3, but lost it to a three-ball run by Dusky. Dusky missed the 15, but Blizzard rattled it, and Dusky took it on the second chance, giving Blizzard the 2-1 series win. Ranked #40 for 15-ball, Blizzard goes to the second round.
That's all for today. CCC action posted in an hour. More pool tomorrow.
