We're back with the week that will bring us to the halfway mark of the season. At the end of week 16, the UPCL season as a whole will be half-finished. Also, at the conclusion of the league week, I will supply a post detailing the final rosters for the CCC, with any revisions from the preliminary rosters outlined about four weeks ago. With that, let's lead with...
Starbucks Cup, Archtown: Two Northeast region rivals get the festivities started. Goldy swung 414 for Everton for a quick start to the game. Sally fired back with a strong 782 for Archtown, giving the hosts the lead over the league's top team. Puff III only had 225 for the Eagles, failing to cover the deficit. Sleepy B. pummeled another 858 for the Arrows, extending their lead quite a bit. Cleo had too much on her backhand, ending her turn early at 135 for Everton, making their situation a lot more dire. Ruby slapped 435 in response for a comfortable Archtown side. Blizzard, somewhat miraculously, forced a response from the hosts by crushing 1333 for the Eagles, putting them at 2107 as their final. Dusky's 334 sufficed to give the Arrows the win at 2409. Archtown gets a surprise win over their big rivals, going to 11-13, while Everton reaches midseason at 26-6. McDonald's Pitch at Pirates Park, Atlantic: Bear didn't exactly impress, opening with 175 for Whitewater in a weak start. Delila staggered early on, but worked her way to a big 656 for Atlantic, giving them a massive lead at the beginning. Twinkie III got caught watching a ball arc into the back 4s, allowing too little reaction time as she deflected the next offering out of bounds for 288 to add to the Shores offense. The Pirates' Amber held her ground, declining the optional replay after a technical error to add 344 for the hosts. Cheddar hit a respectable 296 for Whitewater, but they still trail in the game. Americus belted 920 for Atlantic, giving them a likely untouchable lead. Wild Thing rallied with 418 for the Shores, but they took the loss on 1177 overall. Dominic poked 361 to give the Pirates a final of 2281. Atlantic is up to 18-12, while Whitewater falls again to 12-24.
Coca-Cola Field, Boston: A bit of Urban Core South fun now, with the (unofficially-named) Doubles Derby. Valencia did not get a great start for Golden, hitting just 138. Patches didn't have the best turn for Boston, scoring 192 after a weirdly-angled offering. Patches' sister Dusty answered with 312 for the Pilots, beginning to slowly emerge from her long slump. Puff II drilled 578 for the Swifts to build up their lead a bit more. Strut countered with 416 for Golden, keeping them competitive despite ending his own turn with a weak deflection. Gradley lined 743 for Boston against the visitors and his girlfriend, Valencia. A. Charlton had 265 for the Pilots, but it left them short at 1131 total. Sweetheart tacked on 329 to seal the Swifts win at 1842. Boston is up to 24-11, taking second place in the league as they have won seven straight games, while Golden slides to 15-14, existing in the no man's land of a winning record but a non-playoff spot.
Capital City SuperCenter: The Sharks won in Eastside two weeks ago, and seek another victory to take a season sweep. Graham staked out a decent lead for Eastside, driving with 519 in his opening attack. Chris decided not tempt fate, accepting 272 despite the offer of an optional replay after a technical error. Chelsea fell out of form, taking only 74 for the Sharks in a rare slip up. Missy cut the deficit with a mediocre 226, but it could have been worse had she not used a savvy backhand play to get a few more swings in. Taylor smacked a quick 497 for Eastside, extending their lead to a safer margin. Sprinkles rallied for 663, giving Capital City the lead again. Niki's 281 for the Sharks gave them 1371 total, forcing a modest response from the hosts. Dani met the challenge with 232, giving the Sharpshooters the upset victory on 1393 total. Capital City jumps to 13-16, while Eastside is 16-14 after the loss.
Nestle's Warriors Park, Central: Panda led off with 679 for Southern, a remarkable start for the struggling team. Twilight wiped it all out, smashing 975 for Central to take the initial lead. Shannon hit a ball three times on her turn, skying it on the final touch to end with just 87 for the Monarchs. Dustin went for 322 for the Warriors, using two backhand hits to keep his turn alive long enough to make an impact. Kirstin put up 133 for Southern after elbowing a ball out of bounds on an awkward bounce. Noelle doubled that up with her 266 for Central, maintaining their lead efficiently. Nicole's 135 left the Monarchs at 1034 in their loss. Gizmo clobbered 896 for the Warriors, finishing their game at 2459 in the win. Central is up to 20-14, while Southern has lost five straight in falling to 10-26.
Nike Field, Commerce: The Tradewinds won in Todavía a few weeks ago, and look to secure the sweep at home. Easter had a troubled turn, with many ghost balls disrupting her play and stalling her at 264 for Todavía. Tigerette belted 1031 to give Commerce a massive first lead. Sierra backhanded the same ball twice before getting tangled and ending with 277 for the Stills, as they remain far behind. Ice Cream only scored 176 for the Tradewinds on her turn. Leonardo got some back with 279 for Todavía. Lionel churned out 583 to boost the Commerce lead again. Sparkles pulled in 302 for the Stills, but they took a tough loss with 1122. Lorde had a modest 145, but it sealed a Tradewinds victory at 1935. Commerce is up to 24-11 in a tie for second place in the league, while Todavía hits the midseason at a respectable 17-15. The Intel Pitch, Diamond: The Eagles continue a modest road trip with another divisional game against the Gems, whom they beat two weeks ago back home at Chevrolet Field. Goldy slipped with 199 for Everton in a poor start. Smokey slugged 992 for Diamond in a strong effort. Puff III got stopped with 58 for the Eagles, failing on a backhand attempt that went too high. Citrus didn't have any luck, as her optional replay produced a measly 25 for the Gems. Cleo also struggled, scoring a meager 16 for Everton. Pedey clubbed 447 for Diamond to protect their lead as the final players come to bat. Blizzard managed only 144 for the Eagles, and they took another brutal loss with 417 overall. Cassandra tapped 188 to make it 1652 overall for the Gems in their big win. Diamond gets the division victory to jump to 15-18, while Everton drops to 26-7.
HP Field, Eastside: The season's first Pick Your Side Derby game is up as the Rockers travel to the Sharks. Misty's bold start was not rewarded, as she held a ball on her backhand for too long and ended up at 20 for a weak Westside start. Graham started Eastside off with a solid 352 to get the initial lead. Goatee got most of it back on 301 for the Rockers, but they still trail. Chelsea erupted for 1064 for the Sharks, solidifying their lead effectively. Midnight's slump continued with her adding only 54 to the Westside score as the game gets out of reach for the visitors. Taylor carved up another 746 for Eastside as they surge to a likely victory. Chicky Phil managed 160 for the Rockers, giving them a final of 535 in a brutal loss. Niki's modest 54 put the Sharks at 2216 total in their win. Eastside has four straight home wins, propelling them to 17-14, while Westside is down to 9-18 with the loss.
Chevrolet Field, Everton: A more lopsided game you couldn't get, as the cream of the crop this year hosts the cellar dwellers, with the Eagles in line for the sweep. Crystal stumbled with 75 at the start for Queens, setting a low bar. Goldy put recent struggles for Everton to rest by slugging 1680, giving them an almost guaranteed victory from the start. Kayla dented the deficit with 513 for the Flames. Puff III added a simple 192 for the Eagles, as she is still fighting a personal slump. Max hauled in 856 for Queens, making the deficit more manageable as the game gets into its later stages. Cleo erased all the damage with her 916 for Everton, restoring a healthy lead. Paige couldn't keep up, scoring 48 for the Flames to give them 1492 in the loss, their fifth straight on the road. Blizzard grabbed 394 to give the Eagles 3182 in a big win. Everton has righted the ship again to get to 27-7, while Queens is now 7-22.
Toyota Pitch, Freedom: The Stills look for a sweep after a win over the similarly-ranked Cascades back in Todavía. Easter had a modest start with only 108 for Todavía. Jasmine answered with 484 for Freedom to take the early lead. Sierra took 171 for the Stills, but her turn ended with a poorly-aimed swing. Stinky fired back with 602 to extend the Cascades lead by a large margin. Leonardo pulled Todavía back into range, slicing up 716 to shrink the deficit rapidly. Roxy bought a bit of breathing room by posting 223 for Freedom, but it's anyone's game with the final players up to bat. Sparkles had only 131 for the Stills, giving them a losing final score of 1126. Nikolai scored 364 for the Cascades, sending them to a win with 1673 total. Freedom is now 18-14 at their seasonal midpoint, while Todavía heads to 17-16 on the season split. For the Cascades midseason report, click here.
Amazon Field, Golden: The Pilots look for revenge after a loss to the Blades in Swordpoint, which will bring this segment of the week to a close. Snowball struck 542 for Swordpoint to stake out a good lead for the visitors. Valencia replied with 318 for Golden to keep them somewhat close. Dreamy added 394 to the Blades lead in a solid performance. Dusty pulled in 415 for the Pilots, shrinking the gap a little bit. Shawn let the Swordpoint lead slip, posting a pathetic 25. Strut gave Golden a narrow lead with his 256, setting up a tense finale to the game. Stealth's 153 left the Blades at a quite vulnerable 1114. A. Charlton's 194 sufficed the to give the Pilots a win on 1183 total. Golden goes to 16-14 to snap their three-game losing streak, while Swordpoint continues to falter at the top of the standings, falling to 20-11.
For the first time in league history, I'll guess, 10 out of the first 11 games were won by home teams. Some of these included genuine upset wins. More action to come in the next couple of days.
