We're back with another day of games. We begin with...
Verizon Field Events Center, Pacific: Leonette v. Goldy. The first series of the day features the silver cue in 7-ball. Pacific's Leonette didn't get anything on the break, but Everton's Goldy missed on her only shot of the game, as Leonette ran the table from there in game 1 to take a 1-0 series lead. The Volcanoes' Leonette had a costly scratch in game 2, allowing the Eagles' Goldy to shoot the 6 and 7 easily for the win and a 1-1 series tie. Game 3 ended in sloppy form, but Leonette can't be faulted for a tough miss on a bank attempt for the 7, which Goldy mopped up to take the game and a 2-1 series win. The #74 ranked 7-ball bid, Goldy heads to Del Sur's Microsoft Center to face the Southern Monarchs' Nicole in the second round.
Home Depot Forum, Web City: Sugar v. Chris. The silver cue stays up for a series in 10-ball. Capital City's Chris managed a four-ball run-out after a long battle with Web City's Sugar on the 4 near the top right, and he went up 1-0 in the series for his efforts. The Sharpshooters' Chris likewise struggled from the break in game 2, and failed a jump attempt on the 4 that sparked the Spiders' Sugar to a six-ball run-out, tying the series at 1. Sugar had a bad scratch in game 3, costing her the chance at the 10, as Chris made the last two balls to seal a 2-1 series win. Ranked #69 for 10-ball, Chris is through to the second round.
Verizon Field Events Center, Pacific: Jack v. B. Chapman. Back on the coast, the blue cue makes an appearance in 8-ball. Pacific's Jack had a slightly better start in game 1 than did Victoria's Chapman, working a four-ball run and capitalizing on Chapman's late scratch to take the win and a 1-0 series lead. The Spurs' Chapman shot back when the Volcanoes' Jack started sluggishly in game 2, and Chapman railed off a five-ball run-out with excellent positioning, tying the series 1-1 with a series of good shots. Chapman came through in a comeback victory for game 3, avoiding Jack's defense and then setting up for a modest two-ball run-out, giving her a 2-1 series win. Ranked #65 for 8-ball, Chapman advances to the second round.
Sprint Hall, Victoria: Kavan v. Jennifer Livilotti. The red cue gets its day started with a bit of 7-ball. Terrace City's Jennifer had an excellent start, running four balls, but she left the 7 short at the bottom left, and Victoria's Kavan tapped it in to take a 1-0 series lead without a whole lot of effort in game 1. The Spurs' Kavan sealed the series at 2-0 with a wonderful break that sent the 7 to the bottom left, keeping the Knights' Jennifer away from the table. Jennifer used a five-ball run to set the tone in game 3, and finally caught a break when Kavan left the 7 short at the top right, which she tapped in to make it a 2-1 series. Kavan, ranked #45 in 7-ball, made just three balls (compared to 12 from Jennifer), but he will advance to the second round.
Ebay Center, Queens: Max v. Cleo. The blue cue returns to play some Accuracy. Everton's Cleo held onto perfection longer than Queens' Max, eventually forcing him into a deep deficit and taking the game 1-4 to lead the series 1-0 through her very solid play. The Eagles' Cleo had to fight a bit harder in game 2, as the Flames' Max had a bit of momentum to carry him late in the game, but Cleo made a tough-angle cut on the 8 to the bottom right to preserve a 2-3 win and clinch the series at 2-0. Cleo played a bit better in game 3, faltering at the end but only after Max made his biggest mistake, and Cleo won 2-3 to take the series in a 3-0 sweep. Cleo, ranked #54 for Accuracy, goes to the second round.
Volkswagen Stadium Events Center, Viewpoint Sound: Zach v. Frosty. The silver cue is back for another series of 7-ball. Viewpoint Sound's Zach had the upper-hand in game 1, although it took some time for him to gain the advantage, but his three-ball run paced an attack that led him to a 1-0 series lead over Royal's Frosty. The Meteors' Zach buried three on the break and turned it into a five-ball run, but his scratch on the 5 led the Crowns' Frosty to making the last two balls from ball-in-hand, tying the series at 1 with a quick win. Zach won handily in game 3, scoring a six-ball run with good positioning capped by a carom of the cue off the 6 to pot the 7 in the top right, giving him the 2-1 series win. Zach takes his #27 ranked 7-ball bid to the second round, where he'll host the Diamond Gems' Citrus at this venue.
Honda Driftwood Coliseum, Pearl: Neopolitan v. Gizmo. The silver cue is still up for Rotation. Pearl's Neopolitan played solidly in game 1, doing her best to keep Central's Gizmo at arm's reach throughout, and then pulling away when he missed on the 11 to win 8-5, giving Neopolitan the 1-0 series lead. The Warriors' Gizmo fought hard in game 2, tangling with the Surfers' Neopolitan through the first half of the game before emerging with an 8-4 win in the end, tying the series at 1. Game 3 stayed competitive and close as well, but it was Neopolitan emerging in the end with an 8-6 win as the two traded shots evenly throughout the series. Ranked #31 for Rotation, Neopolitan is through to the second round.
Microsoft Center, Del Sur: Panda v. Kirstin. The team captain and rookie face off in an all Southern Monarchs match of 15-ball with the red cue. Panda prevailed in game 1 after a somewhat messy battle, as both he and Kirstin were rejected by the 9 and 12 clogged at the bottom right. Panda then hit the 6-15 combination to the top right for the win and a 1-0 series lead. Panda secured the series at 2-0 with his game 2 win, a choppy game that ended with him turning a 7-15 combination to the top left to defeat Kirstin. Game 3 went down to the last ball, but Panda's five-ball run got him lined up for the 15. He missed it once, but Kirstin's bank was wide, and Panda buried it the second time, taking the series in a 3-0 sweep.
UPS Hall, Maplewood: Diddley v. Puff I. The game and cue are the same, with more 15-ball and the red cue. Modernistic's Puff I ended up with a win in an unremarkable game 1, as Maplewood's Diddley missed on the 15 with a glancing kick attempt. Puff I leads 1-0 in the series. The play remained decidedly average in game 2, but it was the Lumberjacks' Diddley getting the win over the Union's Puff I, with Diddley putting the 15 in the top side after more back-and-forth play to tie the series at 1. After another similar affair in game 3, Diddley ended it with a four-ball run-out, a big breakout after many alternating shots. Diddley, ranked #34 for 15-ball, takes the series 2-1 and goes to the second round.
HP Field Events Center, Eastside: Taylor Swift v. Wings. The series is now 9-ball with the silver cue. Eastside's Taylor could have won, but she flubbed a shot toward the 7, and Pearl's Wings rallied for a three-ball run-out from there, taking the 1-0 series lead instead with the strong finish. The Sharks' Taylor blasted a four-ball run from her first turn, but her scratched set the Surfers' Wings on a four-ball run-out, capped by an odd-angled 8-9 combination to the bottom side that gave Wings a 2-0 series lead. Game 3 ended in sloppy fashion, with Taylor winning the game on her second short-range attempt on the 9. Wings claimed the series 2-1, and the #63 ranked 9-ball player is on to the second round.
AT&T Hall, Oceanside: Pounce v. Tigerette. The blue cue gets the call for this 7-ball series. Oceanside's Pounce nearly lost game 1, but after his four-ball run ended in a jammed 7, Commerce's Tigerette failed to pot it, and Pounce got it the second time around to take a 1-0 series lead in a quick game. The Waves' Pounce used a similar tactic in a less dominant game 2, weathering a three-ball run from the Tradewinds' Tigerette and then leaving the 7 in an unfavorable location. He made his earlier miss count by burying it in the top right on his second attempt, earning a 2-0 series lead. Tigerette replied on a five-ball run-out to save some face in game 3, giving Pounce a 2-1 series win. Ranked #8 for 7-ball, Pounce will host Sally of the Archtown Arrows at this venue in the second round.
Pepsi Arena, Lighton: Acorn v. Patches. The afternoon ends with the captains of the Cola Wars Derby playing Rotation with the blue cue. Boston's Patches came from behind after a wild start from Lighton's Acorn, working a three-ball run-out to win 8-6 and give herself a 1-0 series lead in the organic rivalry match. Game 2 started off pretty close, but the Prestige's Acorn couldn't keep up as the Swifts' Patches pulled away to an 8-3 win, clinching the series at 2-0 with the dominant effort. Game 3 also started close, with Acorn leading for a bit until Patches unleashed a four-ball run, and from there she took the game 8-4 to sweep the series 3-0. Ranked #60 for Rotation, Patches will head to Golden's Amazon Field Exhibition Hall for a match with the Pilots' Strut in the second round.
GE Stadium Events Center, Southridge: Debby Ryan v. Puff II. The evening kicks off with a series of 8-ball with the blue cue. Boston's Puff II kept herself moving throughout game 1, while Southridge's Debby came up stagnant after one short run, and thus Puff II managed a sloppy win to go up 1-0 in the series. The Swifts' Puff II squandered all of the advantage she built up on a five-ball run from the start of the game, but she sealed it late after making it close with the Defenders' Debby, and Puff II took a 2-0 series lead when she tapped in the 8. Debby led for much of game 3, but Puff II charged back with a four-ball run late in the game, and won on her next turn to take the series in a 3-0 sweep. Ranked #67 for 8-ball, Puff II heads to the second round.
Toyota Arena, Freedom: Roxy v. Valencia. The silver cue gets a series of Rotation. Golden's Valencia got off to a good start, but Freedom's Roxy rallied back with a five-ball run. It wasn't enough, as Valencia won on a three-ball run-out to make it 8-6 in the game and a 1-0 series lead for the visitor. The Cascades' Roxy fought hard in game 2, battling back from a minor deficit to tie the series at 1 with a narrow 8-7 win over the Pilots' Valencia. Roxy had control in game 3 for the entire game, never trailing as she worked to an 8-4 win. Roxy's three-ball run-out included a narrow 9-14 combination to the bottom right and a kick of the 9 off the 13 to get to the top right. Roxy is ranked #30 for Rotation and will play in the second round.
Samsung Arena, Whitewater: Twinkie III v. Brownie. The birthday girl is visiting the Urban Core North for a series of Rotation with the blue cue. Whitewater's Twinkie III never faced much of a challenge from Harrison's Brownie, who couldn't find an accurate shot, as Twinkie III cruised to an 8-3 win and a 1-0 series lead. The Specters' Brownie played a cautious game 2, but the slow and steady method worked for her to answer on an 8-3 win over the Shores' Twinkie III, tying the series at 1. Twinkie III capitalized on Brownie's big mistake of a jump shot attempt that didn't clear the first ball, running five balls to win 8-5 from ball-in-hand, and claiming the series 2-1. Ranked #17 for Rotation, Twinkie III is set to host the Lighton Prestige's Pounce at this venue in the second round.
Honda Driftwood Coliseum, Pearl: Cowzart v. Cleo. The day ends with a third straight Rotation set, going back to the silver cue. Everton's Cleo had a good start to the game, but Pearl's Cowzart kept chipping away, breaking through with a three-ball run-out from ball-in-hand to win 8-4 and take a 1-0 series lead. The Surfers' Cowzart had game 2 won with his five-ball run from the break, but the Eagles' Cleo did make a late comeback attempt before succumbing at 8-4, and falling behind 2-0 in the series. Game 3 played a bit more competitive, but Cowzart used a scratch by Cleo to make a final push for an 8-6 win, going to a 3-0 sweep of the series. Cowzart is ranked #27 for Rotation and will continue to the second round.
More pool and CCC action tomorrow as we get into the meat of the holiday play.
