Select Cricket 2018 - Week 5

We're back with a new and chaotically scheduled week of Select cricket. We begin in...

Volkswagen Stadium, Viewpoint Sound: The Meteors sit Vincent again to close a three-game home stand, while Nikolai rests as the Cascades open a five-game road trip. Jasmine struggled to fight off the slow start to the game, ending at 238 for Freedom in a poor opener. Mams did slightly better with 287 for Viewpoint Sound, her turn ending on an unreachable deflection. Stinky's turn also ended on a deflection at 179 for the Cascades, hurting their chances of imposing their offense on the game. Hoot answered with 430 for the Meteors, giving their lead a bit more strength at the midway mark. Roxy fought back with 552 for Freedom, covering the deficit with her best road effort yet. Nibbles countered on 528 for Viewpoint Sound, restoring their lead to its previous level. Stripes cratered at 90, and the Cascades took the loss with 1059 total. Dani tacked on 880 for the Meteors at the end, finishing their offense at 2125. Viewpoint Sound is 4-2, while Freedom drops to 7-2.

Kraft Crowns Park, Royal: The Crowns begin a four-game home stand benching Jeremias, while the Prestige return from their bye week with Waluigi on the bench for this road game. Acorn set the tone with 647 for Lighton right at the start, pretty good considering he almost took the bench this time. Kayla slugged 1338 in response for Royal, giving them a significant lead with a fantastic start. Spirit had to go with 613 after a deflection ended her turn for the Prestige short of the deficit. Jake melted at 149 for the Crowns, leaving them in a much less comfortable spot at the halfway point. Katelynn slashed 767 for Lighton, keeping their offense steady as they pull ahead again. Nightfur had a mediocre 246 for Royal, giving them a deficit late in the game. Nicole had only 72 for the Prestige at the end, leaving them vulnerable with 2099. Cassie had 418 for the Crowns in the end, stealing the win away with 2151 total. Royal rises to 3-4, just a half-game back of Lighton at 3-3.

FedEx Ground, Eastside: The Sharks' eight-game home stand ends this week after two tripleheaders, this leading off the first. Chelsea rests for the hosts, while Stripes sits for the Cascades. Jasmine had a rough start this time as well with 188 for Freedom, leaving them immediately vulnerable. Graham bounced 618 for Eastside in a hot start, giving them a firm lead early on. Stinky shot back with 608 for the Cascades, covering the deficit in a bold attack. Gizmo crumbled at 200 in a difficult appearance, barely maintaining a lead for the Sharks halfway through. Roxy kept the pressure up with 585 for Freedom on her turn, giving the visitors the lead. Cubby had only 215 for Eastside, allowing them to fall behind with a player each to go. Nikolai put a smashing finish together with 723 for the Cascades, icing their offense at 2104. Salmo couldn't come close with 120 for the Sharks, kicking off their busy stretch with a sour loss at 1153. Freedom rises to 8-2, while Eastside is 2-6.

FedEx Ground, Eastside: The Sharks have an even tougher middle opponents when they rest Cubby against the Defenders, who are sitting Caitlin for this visit to the east, their third in a four-game trip. Bianca had an awkward deflection off her backhand and just out of play to stall her at 108 for Southridge. Graham couldn't build much with 147 for Eastside as this game takes a low-scoring tilt to start with. Debby had a much better second attack with 599 for the Defenders, giving them a nicer lead. Chelsea got caught with a backhand, allowing a second offering to easily take her wicket at only 24 for the Sharks. Stephanie couldn't support much for Southridge with 196 on her worst outing of the year. Gizmo looked awful, not even coming close to a groove with 117 as Eastside is clearly treading water already. Hughbert was knocked out at 39 for the Defenders, leaving their final at a pitiful 942. Salmo tried to rally with 339 for the Sharks, but failed, leaving them to lose with 627. Southridge limped to 8-0, while Eastside falls to 2-7 with very little hope.

FedEx Ground, Eastside: The Sharks end their first tripleheader this week against the Prestige. Nicole sits for the visitors, while the hosts bench Gizmo for performance. Acorn couldn't solve the scoring drop for Lighton, taking only 192 on the opening turn, a rough start yet again. Graham put up a solid 531 for Eastside to start with, giving them the initial lead this time. Spirit had only 144 for the Prestige, unable to come anywhere near the deficit. Chelsea answered with a reasonable 365 for the Sharks, adding a bit more to their lead at the midway mark. Katelynn had a pathetic 12 for Lighton, ruining any realistic hopes of a comeback for them. Cubby put in 352 for Eastside, extending their lead once again with the effort. Waluigi looked alright with 441 for the Prestige, but the damage was already done, and they lost with 789. Salmo put a nice topper on the Sharks win with his 535, putting their total at 1783. Eastside is 3-7, while Lighton slips to 3-4 with the ugly performance.

The Intel Pitch, Diamond: The Gems and Wolves meet twice this week, the return coming five games from now. Cobalt begins his suspensions for the visitors while the Gems rest their captain Smokey. Juno had an alright start for Stonebridge, picking up 341 on a short but pacey turn. Rosalina answered with 392 for Diamond in the lead-off role, giving them a very slight lead. Frosty showed up big for the Wolves, cracking her slump with a massive 832. Citrus chipped a ball just a bit too high, ending at 175 as the Gems fall behind halfway through. Hershey had a down turn with 197 for Stonebridge, weakening their lead a bit. Pedey countered with 759 for Diamond, his surge setting up a close finish for the final players. Vladimir hit a strong 583 for the Wolves, setting their final score at 1953 to challenge the hosts. Cassandra couldn't catch up with 184, leaving the Gems at a loss with 1510. Stonebridge jumps to 6-7 ahead of the rematch, while Diamond drops to 2-7.

FedEx Ground, Eastside: The Sharks are back for their second tripleheader, and the first of two in a row against the Gems. Salmo sits for the Sharks, while Citrus is out for the Gems in the first game. Rosalina had a pitiful 42 to begin the game for Diamond in terrible form. Graham didn't get much going for Eastside, falling at 240 in a difficult turn. Pedey got the scoring up with 417 for the Gems, briefly extending his turn with a backhand touch, although he never cleared that offering. Chelsea answered with 363 for the Sharks, enough to cover the deficit in a low-scoring start to the game. Smokey tried to get Diamond on track, but he mishit an early offering and ended at 57. Gizmo had a paltry 45 for Eastside as well, maintaining a tiny lead late in the game. Cassandra had only 277 for the Gems, leaving them at 793 in a pathetic excuse of a game. Cubby took the win with 359 individually, giving the Sharks 1007 in total. Eastside rises to 4-7 while Diamond drops to 2-8 ahead of the second game.

FedEx Ground, Eastside: The second game sees Gizmo sitting for the Sharks, while Pedey is on the bench as the Gems seek revenge. Rosalina completely reversed her trend with 729 for Diamond this time, nearly outscoring her entire team's last outing. Graham answered with 679 for Eastside on his turn, keeping them within striking distance. Citrus benefited from the rest she got, boosting the Gems lead with 664 on her second attack. Chelsea couldn't keep up, taking only 281 for the Sharks as they fall firmly behind at the halfway mark. Smokey added 361 for Diamond as the scoring appears to be dipping again. Cubby made a push with 687 for Eastside in an attempt to shrink the deficit before the final players' turns. Cassandra botched the finish with only 128 for the Gems, leaving them at 1882. Salmo shoved 684 for the Sharks at the end, capping the comeback at 2331 in the win. Eastside continues to rise to 5-7, while Diamond sinks to 2-9, in the midst of a six-game losing streak.

FedEx Ground, Eastside: The Sharks switch jerseys and allow their captain Graham to rest, while the Lumberjacks end a four-game road trip with Bryant on the bench. Maplewood got a solid start with 490 from Whiskers on the opening attack. Chelsea countered with 583 for Eastside on her turn, giving the hosts a slight advantage early on. Diddley shot back with 485 for the Lumberjacks, showing no difficulty in covering the deficit. Gizmo slipped a bit with 393 for the Sharks, but they still have a small lead at the midway mark of the game. Gabe stepped in with 687 for Maplewood, challenging the hosts greatly with his big performance. Cubby couldn't do it against his former team, melting at 135 for Eastside as they fall far behind with a player each to go. Summer chipped 256 to put the Lumberjacks at a total of 1918. Salmo faltered with 161 for the Sharks, fatigue clearly catching this team late as they fall with 1272. Eastside slips to 5-8, an even 3-3 during the busy week, while Maplewood jumps to 6-5.

Pepsi Prestige Park, Lighton: Out west, the Prestige sit Katelynn for this game against the Monarchs, who see Panda out of action due to a one-game suspension. Avril levied a heavy tax against the hosts with 767 on the opening turn for Southern, showing no regard for keeping it close. Acorn showed relentless pace initially, and then only cooled a bit as he slugged 1297 for Lighton for the early lead. Hoppy had only a middling 258 for the Monarchs, not even close to covering the deficit. Spirit padded the Prestige lead with 481 on a solid turn from the star. Pounce adjusted his swing poorly for Southern, bowing out with a measly 48 as the deficit grows larger. Nicole tacked on 304 more to keep Lighton moving in the right direction. Dominic continues to play well, but the Monarchs fell despite his 752 bringing their final just short at 1825. Waluigi had no pressure on his turn, ending quickly at 16 for the Prestige, who win with 2098. Lighton and Southern both move to records of 4-4 after this game.

Subway Field, Stonebridge: The Wolves are without Cobalt for this return match from earlier in the week, while Cassandra sits for the Gems for rest. Rosalina gave Diamond a decent start with 513 on the first turn, one of her better road efforts. Juno had only 307 for Stonebridge in response, suffering a deflection that knocked a ball out of play. Citrus countered that well enough with 324 for the Gems, maintaining the lead for the visitors. Frosty did quite well with 706 for the Wolves, pulling them ahead halfway through the game with her big showing. Pedey elected to accept 402 for Diamond after a technical error brought his turn to a close, enough to cover the deficit. Hershey crumbled, his desperate need for rest causing him to falter at 25 for Stonebridge as they fall behind. Smokey answered with 645 for the Gems, the captain leading them to a total of 1884. Vladimir couldn't make a rally, ending at 169 as the Wolves fall with 1207. Diamond snaps their losing streak, going to 3-9, while Stonebridge is down to 6-8 after the split with their rivals this week.

Kraft Crowns Park, Royal: The Crowns give Jake his first game off, while Jasmine does the same for the Cascades in the Week 5 finale. Stinky did fairly well at the start for Freedom with his 446, giving the visitors a stable start to the game. Kayla got knocked back at 16 for Royal, putting them at a large deficit early on. Roxy couldn't do anything to extend the Cascades lead, taking a meager 71 instead in a difficult stretch of the game. Jeremias replied with 415 for the Crowns, cutting into the deficit nicely at the midway point. Nikolai shot back with 450 for Freedom on his turn, restoring their lead to its previous strength. Nightfur surged with 710 for Royal, putting them ahead with a player each to go after the impressive outing. Stripes answered with 506 for the Cascades, setting their final at 1473. Cassie tried to clear five balls at once and it almost worked, but a late deflection cut her down at 188, leaving the Crowns to lose with 1329. Freedom survives the scare and rises to 9-2, while Royal is at 3-5.

That's all for this week. Team of the Week will be named shortly on Twitter @UnitedPCL, followed by today's games of pool.
