We begin week 17 of the season, with more teams descending upon their midseason status. First up...
Honda Driftwood Coliseum, Pearl: The first game of the week is a Coastal Division battle between these teams right at the playoff bubble. Snuggle performed a bit of a slow build for Oceanside to start this game, but he did score an admirable 648 to set the visitors up well. Watermelon struggled with 176 for Pearl on her turn, as they will be starting from behind in this game. Caitlin recovered from a rough outing last time to take 424 for the Waves here, padding their lead a little bit. Neopolitan basically got all of that damage back with her 416 for the Surfers, keeping the deficit steady. Celestia didn't feel comfortable at any point of her turn, but she did well with 423 to keep Oceanside in control of the game. Boots slipped up with 176 for Pearl on her turn, damaging their chances at a comeback. Dewey chipped 368 for the Waves, icing their total at 1863 in what should be a win. Wings had a solid pace going, but only 289 points for the Surfers, leaving them with the loss at 1057. Oceanside improves to 22-18, while Pearl is 17-14 on the year.
Verizon Field, Pacific: The Volcanoes and Sharpshooters meet, with each team needing a win to gain some traction after recent losses. Chris had a good thing going for Capital City before a deflection ended his turn at 460, a still solid result from the visiting captain. Starlight dug out 875 for Pacific on her turn, holding on as her pace crumbled with an inconsistent swing midway through. Missy couldn't cover the deficit facing the Sharpshooters, as she came in a bit weaker than usual with 359 this time. Ms. Kitty saw a disastrous result on her turn, taking 80 for the Volcanoes as a swing got away from her. Sprinkles covered the deficit easily for Capital City, striking 595 to make things a bit interesting. Leonette returned the favor with 554 for Pacific, keeping them ahead by a smaller margin as the final players come to bat. Nicole came up a bit low for the Sharpshooters, taking 200 to put them at 1614 total. Chicky Phil did his part with 506 for the Volcanoes, bringing their final score to 2015 in the win. Pacific is now 27-13 on the year, while Capital City slides again to 20-14.
McDonald's Pitch at Pirates Park, Atlantic: Both teams have struggled in the Eastern Hills Division, but the Pirates would like to enter midseason on a good note against the last-place Gems. Smokey had a poor turn for Diamond at the start, recording only 193 to lead off. Delila just about doubled the effort with 380 for Atlantic, getting beat when she couldn't backhand a ball to safety. Citrus put in a poor respectable effort with 495 for the Gems, covering the deficit with ease. Isabella bested her role model with 566 for the Pirates, ending on a narrowly out-of-bounds backhand, as the hosts' lead grows. Pedey kept the Diamond attack going strong with 673 this time, forcing the hosts to digger deeper to recover their lead. Americus didn't quite meet the challenge with 396 for Atlantic, leaving them narrowly behind with a player each to go. Rosalina couldn't handle all the deflections in her turn, ending with a weak 104 for the Gems as they finish at 1465, a vulnerable mark. Klaus showed a bit of panic before collecting 279 for the Pirates, giving them a win at 1621. Atlantic's much needed win gets them to 22-13 at midseason, while Diamond is 11-26 now.
The Intel Pitch, Diamond: The Gems and Tradewinds meet in the Equalizers Derby, named for the fact that these two teams met in a tie two years ago. Tigerette slumped off of her recent road pace, but a score of 471 is good enough for Commerce against their struggling hosts. Smokey didn't take it so lightly for Diamond, getting them into the lead with his 567, a good mark from the captain. Ice Cream covered the deficit for the Tradewinds with 400, but they are more vulnerable this time around. Citrus faltered at 120 for the Gems, just two swings after settling a ball with her backhand. Lionel proved to be highly productive for Commerce on his turn, belting 940 with a laser focus on the 6-run zone. Pedey shot straight back with 825 for Diamond on his turn, keeping them within striking distance late in the game. Lorde scattered 376 for the Tradewinds on her turn, hoping that setting their final at 2187 will be enough to get the win. The skid continued for the Gems, as 276 from Rosalina kept them in a loss with 1786. Commerce avoids the tie this time, going to 12-19, while Diamond is really struggling at 11-27.
HP Field, Midland: The Predators return home for an M-Line Derby, against the Union, who play in the second of their six-game road trip. Ms. Puppy backed off from recent performances, taking a sturdy 527 for Modernisitc this time to establish her team in the game. Shawn kept it fairly close for Midland, bailing at 418 as his swing evaded him late. Daisy added a reasonable 399 for the Union, continuing her growth into a solid secondary scorer. Rainmane's early struggles with establishing her swing led to a lower output, with 368 as the Predators lost a bit of ground at the midway point. Puff I inflicted more serious damage for Modernistic, lacing 817 to boost their lead quite a bit with the performance. Leonardo pulled back a bit too much on one swing, ending his turn far too early at 130 for the now-dejected Midland side. Strawberry scooped another 639 for the Union on her turn, bringing their impressive final score to 2382. Fuchsia grabbed 371 at the end for the Predators, who lost brutally with 1281 total. Modernistic has really found their road groove, going to 12-18 while dumping Midland to 17-18.
UPS Ground, Maplewood: The Lumberjacks and Spurs meet twice this week, the next meeting being in nine games, with the Lumberjacks also reaching midseason in this one. Spice made sure to make the hosts uncomfortable from the start, slugging 1312 to give Victoria a huge lead early on. Fluffina saw a doubly-deflected ball dip under her bat to take out her wicket at 113, making things dire immediately for Maplewood. Yekaterina flipped another 672 for the Spurs on her turn, extending their lead significantly. Diddley had an ugly 45 for the Lumberjacks this time, potentially killing their slim comeback hopes. B. Chapman saw one get away from her for Victoria, adding just 112 but not harming their massive lead by any means. Bryant gathered 471 for Maplewood on his turn, making them a bit more respectable despite the deficit. Wario bashed another 985 for the Spurs, bringing their likely victorious score to 3081. Waluigi doubled the Lumberjacks offense with 629, putting them at 1258 in the loss. Victoria's big win carries them to 14-18, while the nine-game home losing streak Maplewood's on has them at 12-23.
Samsung Whitewater Stadium, Whitewater: The Shores are back to end a four-game home stand, while the Stills take an odd game on the road to come out of their bye week. Easter looked very fresh on the field for Todavía, smashing 791 to give the visitors a big lead early on. Bear saw his turn come to a quick end with a bad swing, giving Whitewater a poor 103. Sierra chipped in with 292 for the Stills, adding lightly to the lead. Twinkie III cut into the deficit quite a bit with 582 for the Shores, but they still have a long way to go at the halfway mark of the game. Sparkles parried the attack away in great form for Todavía, knocking 919 to pad their lead in a big way. Marsell could not keep up for Whitewater, crashing out early at a meager 82 as the hosts seem resigned to taking the loss this time. Bells hauled in 376 for the Stills at the end of the game, doing her part to get them to 2378 overall for a presumptive victory. Shaggy wasn't that great, posting 248 for the Shores to bring them to 1015 in the loss. Todavía rises to 17-17, while Whitewater is at the same level with a 13-13 record.
Microsoft Pitch, Del Sur: The Monarchs return to action after a bye week, playing the very inconsistent Spiders. Shadow came in a bit under his usual mark of performance, with 336 to begin the game for Web City, a concerning score. Panda punished the mistake with a strong 495 for Southern, giving them the initial lead for once. Ted fired back with 439 for the Spiders, covering the deficit but falling early when he failed to get a backhand hit in. Hoppy dropped the ball badly for the Monarchs, producing a meager 113 as the hosts have fallen behind at the midway mark. Shiny failed to create a bigger lead for Web City, getting beat on a deflection at only 108. Pounce shrunk the deficit quite a bit with 248 on his turn, but Southern will need a bit more to get the better of this low-scoring game. Dani finally got the scuffling Spiders off the blocks, rallying with 519 to put their final score at 1402. Shannon got jammed early and couldn't pull the Monarchs all the way back, ending at 376 individually and 1232 for the team. Web City's win lifts them to 12-19, while Southern continues to struggle at 9-19.
Capital City SuperCenter, Capital City: The Sharpshooters return home to reach midseason, hosting their closely matched Southwest Division rivals, the Torpedoes, who start a three-game road trip. Smudge cranked out 939 for Infinity at the start of this one, a great game from the captain. Chris couldn't keep up for Capital City, ending at 112 when he took an errant swing. Solaris had a technical error replay for the Torpedoes, ripping 543 with two backhand plays to pad the lead quite a bit. Missy pulled back just a bit too much on her turn for the Sharpshooters, ending with a measly 80 points as they are way back at the halfway point. Whiskers had a rough start and a quick end for Infinity, scoring 192 despite the troubles. Sprinkles couldn't do any better with 176 for Capital City, almost ensuring they won't be winning this game. Mr. Snowman lined another 864 for the Torpedoes at the end, bringing their presumably victorious total to 2538. Nicole produced 376 for the Sharpshooters, but they got run over at 744 in the loss. Infinity got the best of their competitive rivals, going to 22-12, while Capital City is 20-15 at midseason.
Starbucks Cup, Archtown: The Arrows have a home doubleheader, with the first game against their Northeast Division rivals, the Specters, in a test to their resilience. Sydney had a small dropoff for Harrison from recent outings, taking 399 in a decent appearance. Sally kept Archtown close, but her lack of offense left the hosts with 345 and a small deficit initially. Twinkie II is not interested in keeping the game close, swatting a crisp 703 for the Specters to give their lead a boost. Sleepy B. lost control a bit too early for her liking, ending at 609 as the Arrows lose a bit of ground at the midway mark. Lexi poked a decent 357 for Harrison, weakening their lead just a bit as she missed her mark. Ruby did as she usually does, covering the deficit late for Archtown with 527 in a sturdy performance from the captain. Sugar got beat by a slow offering, swinging too early and ending at 224 to bring the Specters to a final of 1683. Dusky contributed 560 for the Arrows at the end, starting with caution before exploding to the finish. The Arrows win with 2041. Archtown gets another boost to 18-18, 5-3 in the division, while Harrison is 14-22 with an 0-5 division mark.
Starbucks Cup, Archtown: The Arrows change uniforms for the second game in the doubleheader, facing a strong Pilots team playing their only game of the week. Valencia was far too aggressive for Golden, ending on a pathetic 21 as the visitors have their work cut out for them now. Sally improved a bit game-over-game, batting 460 for Archtown to create a lead this time. Dusty made sure to cover the deficit for the Pilots, pummeling 796 to give them the temporary lead. Sleepy B. had some trouble focusing for the Arrows, ending at 304 as they've fallen behind at the halfway mark. Strut put most of Dusty's work to waste, as the Golden veteran hit a sorry 48 that endangers the team's lead once again. The low-scoring affair continues as Ruby hit only 96, bringing her team within five points of their visitors as the final players come to bat to settle it. A. Charlton scored 407 for the Pilots, a decent effort that leaves them with 1272 overall, making the game too close to call right now. Dusky had an errant backswing take out her wicket at 361, leaving the Arrows in a narrow loss with 1221. Golden is happy to get the win to go to 23-11, now in fourth place all alone, while Archtown is happy to be competitive at 18-19 after a thrilling game.
Blades Fusion ProGlide Park, Swordpoint: The segment ends with the Heartland Derby, a Southwest Divisional, between the league-leading Blades and the Sharpshooters. Chris had an acceptable outing with 368 for Capital City, but this is a dangerous opponent to hit lightly against. Snowball made no mistake in proving that point earnestly, drilling 1007 to give Swordpoint a large lead early on. Missy didn't heed the warning all that well, scoring 344 as the Sharpshooters remain far behind in this one. Dreamy ran a great line of support for the Blades, blasting 1043 to double their offense and lead. Sprinkles was never able to break her defensive posture in this game, ending with a paltry 135 for Capital City. Bandit saw a total collapse for his pace when the pitch got cluttered, and he managed 295 for Swordpoint to keep their lead fairly healthy. The Sharpshooters' Nicole had 330, bringing their final to 1177 overall in their fourth straight road loss. Stealth stacked another 517 for the Blades, and they won with 2862. Swordpoint enters midseason at 25-10, while Capital City slides to 20-16 on the year.
That's it for this segment. We'll try to push another one to publication tomorrow before my schedule gets busy.
